Burn Fell TP 1041
Objective: To survey the Prominence/ drop of this hill as a potential sub Four.
Background: Potential for sub Four status based upon it's contours. There is a Trig Pillar with a Flush Bracket of S5000 with OS recording the height as 431.596m.
JNSA Dataset: Line 8893 no Lidar is available for either the summit or Col. JNSA Data : Summit 430m Col 410m P20?
Date: Saturday 18th September 2021
Weather Conditions: overcast and calm
Equipment: Trimple Geo 7x
Summit: The summit position is 11 metres North East of the Trig Pillar at SD 67406 53550, approaching from the NE it was clear this ground was higher than the Trig. The summit area is flat and in due course LIDAR may identify an alternate high point.
Col: The critical col between Burn Fell and Baxton Fell runs east/ west valley to valley, the ground is very flat and boggy at this col and named as Dunsop Head. There is a wall running north/ south across the Col but also to the west, a fence, I assume to protect livestock from this boggy area. Heading east the stream becomes Dunsop Brook and westwards the stream system becomes Costy Clough. Measured the col position immediately of the fence at SD 67485 54215.
Output: The difference between the summit and col height positions is 19.00m.
Conclusion: The site survey confirms that Burn Fell's prominence is 1 metre short of a sub Four.
